Shelby as diamond merchant?

I read the Vanity Fair article. Anyone know how to reach the author?
I ennjoyed it but never heard that Shelby was a diamond merchant.
What country was that in? I know he had a friend who became a diamond merchant, Masten Gregory.

I know he likes fine jewelry and commissioned rings to be made for special friends.

Anybody got any more info on this fascinating sidelight?
