I have a 2007 GT500 with 3300 miles on it. This morning when I started the car there was a loud ticking sound. It doesn't sound like a valve issue as it is a seperate noise from hearing the valves. It was never there before and I don't drive the car a whole lot and its performance has not changed in any way.I am a bit baffled, does anyone have an idea of what the issue may be?
Your best bet would be to take to the dealership and have it looked at. However, this method can be fun. 3300 miles...does most of the mileage come from highway, track, or stop-n-go driving? Does the noise come from the back of the engine? (can you isolate the noise to any part of the car?) Does it resemble the noise some diesel engines make? Is it tinny or more of a knock or maybe more of a rattle? Is is different at idle vs. moving? Is it different when the clutch is engaged vs. not engaged? Is it different when the brakes are engaged? Does it change (or go away) when you rev the engine? Is it different when the engine is cold vs warmed up? Does it only happen after driving a few miles or is it constant? Have you checked all fluid levels? Power steering, brake, engine oil, radiator, etc. How often do you start the car? For how long do you let it run? When was the last time you changed the oil? What type of gas do you use? Do you buy quality gas (Chevron, Shell, BP, 76, etc)? How old is the gas in the tank currently? Do you let the tank stay mostly empty or mostly full? -todd
Hi Todd - 3300 miles...does most of the mileage come from highway, track, or stop-n-go driving? I rarely drive in traffic, mostly around town and some freeway driving Does the noise come from the back of the engine? (can you isolate the noise to any part of the car?) Yes, it seems to be at the back/ lower part of the engine. It is actually louder when I am standing next to the open driver door. Does it resemble the noise some diesel engines make? No Is it tinny or more of a knock or maybe more of a rattle? Fairly loud ticking noise, not a rattle for sure. Is is different at idle vs. moving? Depends on engine RPM's - the ticking is in step with the speed of the motor. Is it different when the clutch is engaged vs. not engaged? No Is it different when the brakes are engaged? No Does it change (or go away) when you rev the engine? No Is it different when the engine is cold vs warmed up? No - this just started this morning. Does it only happen after driving a few miles or is it constant? Constant Have you checked all fluid levels? Power steering, brake, engine oil, radiator, etc. Checked oil this morning - that's perfect, will check the PS fluid & brake fluid. How often do you start the car? For how long do you let it run? I drive it at least two days a week, my office is close to my house. When was the last time you changed the oil? I haven't changed it yet, I bought the car in April with 900 miles on it. What type of gas do you use? Do you buy quality gas (Chevron, Shell, BP, 76, etc)? How old is the gas in the tank currently? Chevron 91 - need to fill up every 10 days or so. Do you let the tank stay mostly empty or mostly full? Maybe a week / 10 days max.
Maybe at the rear oxygen sensor...? I would also keep an eye on that clutch. But since you didn't mention a change in the noise with the clutch pedal depressed, that's probably not an issue for you at this point.
I had the same type of sound in my 08 right after I bought it...it had 558 miles on it and the guy hardly ever drove it other then just idling around...what that caused was plug fouling and some unburned fuel was getting into the cats...causing them to basically burn the ceramic...I was getting on it one day and started blowing out chalk like dust from the exhaust...cats were coming apart...after installing new highflow cats I have never heard that sound again...that along with some simliar info from others have pointed to the sound coming from the bad cats falling apart...
