I took this picture of the original KD marking on 2751 last weekend (using a cell phone - hence the poor quality). The lettering is under the RH front fender, up near the headlamp. Does anyone else have these original markings still on their cars?
I have them on mine. I also have them across the crossmember below the radiator support. I was told that it stands for "knock down" which let the line workers know that something was deleted on the car. My car has radio delete.
There was a thread about this on the VMF (www.vintage-mustang.com) last year. But, the VMF has just gone through some updates and much of the old posts are gone. Go to the concours forum on the VMF and show these photos. Turns out, it DOES NOT mean "knockdown". I don't recall exactly what the detemination was, and I printed that out, now I'll need to go find it.
As I understand it, KD (knock-down) means that the car was 'knocked-down' from the production line before it was fully assembled (rather than that it has a delete option). Most (all?) shelby mustangs were knocked-down from the Ford line partially assembled (ie without fender caps, hood, trunk lid etc) so that the shelby plant didn't need to waste time removing these parts before fitting the Shelby-specific items. I also have a (half hidden) KD marking on the top front face of the radiator support.
